Welcome from the director
We are an accredited journalism and mass communications program with a national and
international reputation for providing students with a quality education. We teach
everything from the basics of news writing to the intricacies of web design. From
the time you arrive, until the day you graduate, opportunities for involvement in
student media are plentiful. We house the Huck Boyd National Center for Community
Media, the Journalism Education Association, PRSSA and other active student organizations,
as well as the award-winning Collegian newspaper and the Royal Purple yearbook.
A Diverse Learning Environment
We attract a diverse population and received the KSU Outstanding Unit for Enhancing Diversity on campus in 2008-09. Our undergraduate and graduate students are some of the most diverse and academically talented students on campus. Our location in the heart of America is a selling point for attracting students from all over the world who want to come here to study journalism and mass communication. We also send our students abroad and have international ties in such areas as South America, Europe, and Asia. Our faculty is highly international in scope as well, offering study abroad and research experiences in such exotic locations a Nairobi, Kenya.
Leaders in Converged Journalism
The Miller School is a a leader in the field of multi-purposing -- the process of creating information simultaneously for multiple outlets including print, broadcast and cable, online, and mobile technology. Our student media including Wildcat radio and the Collegian are finding ways to work together to provide students with experience in converged news operations parallel to industry standards today. Our Media Convergence Center allows students to cover news and information for our community airing daily on Cable Channel 8. With our newspapers, TV programs, radio outlets and online opportunities, our students leave with a wealth of skills, ready to hit the ground running in a new job.
Fostering Free and Responsible Speech
For any respected journalism and mass communications program, freedom of speech is paramount. The First Amendment allows individuals and the media to express themselves through publication and dissemination. Our faculty and staff believe in fostering an environment conducive to free speech. We teach students to uphold their rights and assume the responsibilities that come with such freedom. We keep strong ties with our alumni who understand our needs and goals and return to campus to inspire current students with the standards set in media organizations.
The Place to Be!
Whether you are interested in advertising, broadcast news, photography, print journalism, public relations, or new media, K-State is the place to be. You won’t find a more enthusiastic group of students, faculty or staff ... or a nicer community in which to live. If you have questions, feel free to contact anyone of us. We'll look forward to meeting your needs.
Sincerely,
Angela Powers
