2006 Readiness Communications Conference, Kansas State University

The 2006 Readiness Communications Conference was held in Manhattan, Kansas, Nov. 8-10, 2006 and was sponsored by the McCormick Tribune Foundation, A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications and the Huck Boyd National Center for Community Media at Kansas State University. The conference coincides with the opening of the university’s new National Agricultural Biosecurity Research Center (NABRC).

The goal of this conference is to generate a media guide that addresses what to do before, during and after an emergency or disaster such as a hurricane, tornado, food safety incident or bio-terrorist attack. Such events call for timely, informed, accurate, non-sensational and trustworthy communications. The guide will include:

  • knowing who to contact to get accurate information
  • understanding how the emergency and disaster response systems operate and what roles emergency personnel play
  • developing an emergency preparedness plan, including knowing how to cover the community when an emergency or disaster occurs

Upcoming JMC Events

  • Dec 11: Last day of classes, fall 2009
