Students are responsible for planning their own curriculum. But to assist that process, all majors are assigned a faculty member in their sequence.
Pre-majors meet individually each semester with the school's lead adviser. Please bring a copy of the printed Curriculum Guide to each advising session. Students have great flexibility in choosing which courses to take in any given semester. For the freshman year, we recommend basic courses such as Expository Writing I, College Algebra, a social science course, macroeconomics, and a natural science course with a lab, in addition to MC 110 Mass Communication in Society as an introduction to the major.
To assist students in making sure that graduation requirements are met, the school's student records coordinator does a "graduation check" once a student completes 90 hours of coursework. The "grad check" is a safeguard against reaching senior status without fulfilling basic requirements.
Before your enrollment date, you must meet with your adviser. You can schedule an advising appointment by using the sign-up sheet that faculty members post outside their offices. To enroll in courses, you must meet first with your adviser because only an adviser can clear you for enrollment through KATS.
Before meeting with your adviser, get a curriculum planning sheet in Kedzie 105, and use this booklet to pencil in courses you should complete for the upcoming semester. Take this preliminary plan with you to your advising appointment.
Your date to enroll will depend on the number of credits that you have completed, not including the current semester. This number is available in the general information section of your student records on KATS.Check your credit total there, and match it with the Enrollment Time Chart posted on the K-State web site and in Kedzie 105.
Students also should have the K-State Undergraduate Catalog, which provides a brief description of every course offered at K-State and the prerequisites for it.
