the enrollment process

Before your enrollment date, you must meet with your adviser. You can schedule an advising appointment by using the sign-up sheet that faculty members post outside their offices. To enroll in courses, you must meet first with your adviser because only an adviser can clear you for enrollment through iSIS.

Before meeting with your adviser, get a curriculum planning sheet in Kedzie 105, and use this page to pencil in courses you should complete for the upcoming semester. Take this preliminary plan with you to your advising appointment.

Your date to enroll will depend on the number of credits that you have completed, not including the current semester. You can find your enrollment date from the Self Service page in iSIS.

The K-State undergraduate catalog can be found online at catalog.ksu.edu. It provides a brief description of every course offered at K-State and the prerequisites for it. Here is a sample course description:

  • ENGL 100. Expository Writing I. (3) I, II, S. Introduction to expressive and informative writing. Frequent discussions, workshops and conferences. Offers extensive practice in the process of writing: getting ideas, drafting, analyzing drafts, revising, and editing.

  • Following the course number and name and credit amount, the "I, II, S" means the course typically is offered fall, spring and summer sessions.

Explanation of Abbreviations in Line Schedule:

ENGL 100 -- Course number. The letters ENGL denote the department in which the course is offered. The three-digit number represents the course level:

000-099 -- Courses offered for credit but not applied toward degree requirements.

100-299 -- Lower division undergraduate courses designed for freshmen and sophomores.

300-499 -- Upper division undergraduate courses designed for juniors and seniors.

500-699 -- Primarily for juniors and seniors, but also may be taken for graduate credit.

700-up -- Primarily for graduate students, with courses 800 and above only for graduate students.

3 -- Credit hours received upon passing the course.

AA -- Class section. Some course are offered a number of times. Each class carries its own section designator.

REC -- Type of course. "LEC" means lecture, "REC" means recitation which involves both lecture and frequent class participation, "LAB" means practical application in a laboratory setting, "QZ" means a prescheduled exam time (often in evenings for multiple-section science and math classes), "AUD" means audio-tutorial, and "STD" means studio work. Be careful to enroll in all segments of a course; lectures and labs are listed separately.

10330 -- Reference number. This number is used to identify the specific section or part of the course for the computer.

P -- Grade. Left blank if for a letter grade. (In actuality, ENGL 100 would be blank.) Some courses can be taken for credit/no credit ("C") or A/Pass/F ("P").

MWF -- Days that this section meets. Most courses either meet for 50 minutes on MWF or for 75 minutes on TU ("U" is Thursday). A student can plan courses back-to-back; at least 10 minutes is provided between classes.

830 -- Time that this section meets. MWF 830 means 8:30 a.m. to 9:20 a.m., and TU 805 means 8:05 a.m. to 9:20 a.m. Evening courses use P, as in M 700-930P.

LS 001 -- Building and room where the class meets. Abbreviations are in the front of the Line Schedule (Schedule of Classes). This example indicates Room 1 in Leasure Hall.

Doe, John -- Instructor's name or course coordinator.
