Roberta G. Applegate Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1990 by the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications and the Manhattan Chapter of Women in Communications, Inc., to honor the late K-State journalism faculty member upon her retirement in 1988. Applegate was one of the first women to serve as a gubernatorial press secretary. The scholarship is to be awarded to majors, or students who intend to major, in journalism and mass commmunications.
Aubrey E. and Jewell I. Bilger Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1987 by Mrs. Bilger to provide financial assistance to deserving journalism students and to honor the Bilgers, both of whom were KSU journalism alumni and went on to teach. Mr. Bilger taught journalism for 31 years in Kansas schools in Hiawatha, Newton and Salina. This scholarship is to be awarded to Kansas high school graduates who are majoring in journalism and mass commmunications.
Henry S. Blake Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1966 by Mrs. Blake to honor her late husband who was the president of Capper Publications when he died in 1956. The scholarship is to be awarded to a freshman journalism and mass commmunications student on the basis of need and scholarship.
Mamie Alexander Boyd Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1974 by family and friends to honor the late Mrs. Boyd who was a K-State alumni and Kansas newspaperwoman with an intensive interest in youth and education. The scholarship is to be awarded to the sophomore, junior or senior who shows the most potential for further service to society. This scholarship is renewable subject to satisfactory academic performance and to availability of funds.
COHO Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1979 to honor Esther M. Cormany and F. Virginia Howe who were long-time K-State faculty members. This scholarship is to be awarded in an amount equivalent to the annual cost of tuition and/or fees to female students majoring in electronic media or electronic journalism.
Gomer T. Davies Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1964 to honor the former editor of the Concordia Kansan for his years of service to his community and profession and to perpetuate his memory through the extension of journalism training to outstanding majors in the field of journalism. Mr. Davies edited the paper for more than 50 years. The scholarship is to be awarded to a Kansas resident majoring in journalism and mass commmunications.
Paul and Rachel Dittemore Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1999 by Rachel Dittemore to honor the Dittemores and to provide financial assistance to journalism and mass commmunications students.
Arex G. Ehrsam Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1989 by friends and family of Arex G. Ehrsam to perpetuate his memory on the campus of his alma mater and to provide financial assistance to students majoring in electronic media/electronic journalism and theatre. This scholarship is awarded to a journalism and mass communications student on an even-numbered year to a sophomore, junior or senior with financial need as a consideration.
Milton S. Eisenhower, Jr. Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1990 by Milton S. Eisenhower, Jr., to provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding journalism and mass commmunications students who are on the Royal Purple and/or Collegian staff. This scholarship is to be awarded to outstanding journalism and mass commmunications students who have a proven need for financial assistance to meet their necessary college expenses.
Dr. Mary A. Erlanger Graduate Student Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1989 by Dr. Erlanger, a 1943 journalism graduate who earned a Ph.D. and started a new career in her 60s. This scholarship is to be awarded to any student enrolled in the graduate program based on motivation, responsibility and financial need. The donor requests that preference be given to students who are returning to graduate school after professional work.
Andrea Glenn Journalism Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2001 by family and friends of Andrea Glenn to honor her and to provide financial assistance to journalism students. Preference will be given to students who have graduated from an accredited Kansas High School seeking a career in print journalism.
Max E. and Jean Hollinger Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1997 by Max E. Hollinger, a 1950 journalism graduate, to recognize his long standing commitment to excellence at K-State and the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications and to provide financial assistance to journalism and mass commmunications majors or pre-majors. The donor requests that recipients shall have taken, or plan to take, a class in finance and insurance and that preference be given to Dickinson County High School graduates. This scholarship can be renewed if scholastic standards are met and is subject to availability of funds.
Virginia Howe Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2000 by Gordon and Betty Jump to honor Virginia Howe and to provide financial assistance to journalism and mass commmunications students.
Marshall Ice Wildcat Radio Award
This award was established in 2004 by Carl and Mary Ice to honor Marshall Ice for his dedication to Wildcat Radio and to provide financial assistance to a journalism and mass commmunications student who is on staff at Wildcat Radio, KSDB-FM. The award recognizes significant contributions and dedication to the station. Preference is given to a Kansas student.
Dow Jones Foundation Minority Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1989 by the Kansas State University Foundation to provide a scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding minority journalism and mass commmunications student.
Gwendolyn R. and Frank W. Jordan Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1997 by Mr. and Mrs. Jordan, family and friends to honor the donors. This scholarship is to be awarded to journalism and mass commmunications majors or pre-majors who have completed one or more semesters and have a demonstrated financial need and are in good standing with the School.
Journalism and Mass Communications Merit Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1987 to provide financial assistance to outstanding incoming freshmen enrolled in the school of journalism and mass commmunications who maintain a GPA of 3.0. Each year a new incoming freshman will be chosen so that after a period of four years there should be a JMC Merit Scholar at each of the four levels of undergraduate instruction. The scholarship is renewable if scholastic standards are met and is subject to availability of funds.
Kansas City Press Club Award
This award is given annually to a journalism major currently enrolled in his or her junior year. Candidates should be students who have "compiled good academic records and have shown genuine promise of a successful career in journalism as defined by the Society of Professional Journalists and whose educational process would be furthered with the award." Candidates are nominated by the scholarship committee and approved by the press club.
Kansas City Star Award
This award was established in 1974 to honor the award-winning daily newspaper and is awarded to a junior for use during his or her senior year. In the words of the 1974 company president, the award should be given to "someone who has displayed … excellence in any of the important elements that go to make up the modern newspaper." The recipient is chosen in cooperation between the scholarship committee and the Star.
Kansas Professional Communicators Award
This award, formerly known as the Kansas Press Women Award, was established in the early 1950s to provide financial assistance to the recipient based on need, scholarship and professional promise. The recipient is chosen in cooperation between the scholarship committee and the KPC.
Ralph and Ruthana Lashbrook Scholarship
This scholarship was established in l989 to honor the Lashbrooks, both of whom were K-State graduates. Mr. Lashbrook was a 35-year faculty member and a retired journalism school head. The scholarship provides financial assistance to journalism and mass commmunications majors who are Kansas graduates enrolled in at least 12 hours of study. Students with an outside concentration of Business and graduates of Almena and Garden City are given priority.
Martha F. and Samuel H. Logan Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2006 by Martha F. and Samuel H. Logan to provide financial assistance to an undergraduate journalism and mass commmunications student. Preference will be given to a junior or senior. The same student may be awarded the scholarship for two years.
Jean Gibbs McLain Journalism Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2007 to honor Jean Gibbs McLain, class of 1940, and to provide financial assistance to
journalism and mass communications students.
Marlene Myers (Coe) Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1980 by the family of the late Marlene Myers (Coe) to perpetuate her memory and to commemorate her distinctive involvement with the K-State Royal Purple. This scholarship is to be awarded to a third year student on the Royal Purple staff with financial need being a weighing factor.
Dev Nelson Scholarship
This scholarship was established in l981 to honor the long-time radio voice of the K-State Wildcats for his years of service. Nelson graduated from K-State and was the first "play-by-play" sportscaster on the Big 8 basketball television network. Nelson was inducted into the K-State Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. This scholarship is to be awarded, based on need, to an electronic media or electronic journalism major, including a graduate student, who has demonstrated evidence of pursuing a career in broadcasting.
Fred M. Parris Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1975 by family and friends of the late Fred M. Parris to provide recognition to an outstanding student majoring in journalism and mass commmunications. The scholarship is to be awarded to a student in his/her junior year who exhibits the highest possession of three qualities in equal degrees: character, ability and need.
Chester Peterson, Sr., and Ted Lindshield Award
This award was established in 2004 by Chester and Mary Peterson, Jr., to honor Mr. Peterson and Mr. Lindshield and to provide financial assistance to journalism and mass commmunications students. This award will be awarded to a graduating senior after completion of seven semesters of coursework. Consideration is limited to the top three graduating seniors based strictly and solely on GPA within the defined major of Journalism and Mass Communications, to include Ag Journalism. Other coursework will not be considered. Preference will be given to students from the Southern Saline or Northern McPherson County area.
Jesse W. Prisock Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1980 by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters and friends to perpetuate the memory of Mr. Prisock and to recognize a K-State electronic media or electronic journalism student who demonstrates potential to make outstanding contributions to the broadcast industry. This award is made annually to a junior, senior or graduate journalism student.
Ellen Warren Roberts Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2005 through a specific bequest from the June and Ellen Roberts Trust to perpetuate the memory of Ellen Warren Roberts and to provide financial assistance to undergraduate journalism and mass commmunications students.
Leon Sanders Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1997 by the Vivian L. Sanders Revocable Living Trust Agreement to provide financial assistance and recognition to journalism and mass commmunications students enrolled as majors or pre-majors. This scholarship is awarded based on potential and ability or financial need. This scholarship can be renewed if scholastic standards are met and is subject to availability of funds.
Fay Seaton Work Scholarship
The scholarship was established in 1945 by the late Fay Seaton, who was the publisher of the Manhattan Mercury-Chronicle until his death in 1952, to provide working scholarships for students "to perform appropriate service under the direction of the journalism and mass communications department head." This scholarship is awarded to JMC Ambassadors and/or office assistants. Students who receive this award assist the school with office work, recruitment and outreach.
Carol Sitz-Pelser Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1996 by Sarah G. Sitz to provide financial assistance to an undergraduate student majoring in journalism and mass communications.
Society of Collegiate Journalists Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1990 by the Kansas State Chapter of the Society for Collegiate Journalists with one-half of the available amount being awarded to an incoming journalism and mass commmunications freshman and the remaining one-half awarded to a photographer who is a member of the Royal Purple or Collegian staff who has submitted a portfolio of his/her work.
Sullivan, Higdon & Sink Award
This award was established in 1978 and is funded by the Wichita, Kansas advertising and public relations agency to provide financial assistance to the outstanding public relations senior who has shown an interest in academics, PRSSA and other activities with a desire to enter the public relations field.
Jaconette Lawrence Tietze Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1985 to honor the former K-State journalism student whose father was a newspaper publisher in Council Grove. This scholarship is awarded annually to numerous journalism and mass commmunications majors.
Ronald and Ellen Warren Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2000 by Ronald and Ellen Warren to provide financial assistance to two or more journalism and mass commmunications students who have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0. Financial need will be a determining factor if students are equally qualified.
Sarah Watson Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1989 by Margaret Watson Peal to honor her mother and is to be awarded to an outstanding graduate of a Kansas high school who is or will be enrolled in at least 12 semester hours as a print journalism major. This scholarship may be renewed as long as the recipient continues to be enrolled in print journalism and maintains a 3.5 GPA and is subject to availability of funds.
Malcolm Aaron Wilson Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1979 by family and friends of the late Malcolm Wilson to perpetuate his memory, to commemorate his years of active and varied services in the fields of journalism and government and to likewise recognize and pay tribute to his interest in providing young people with educational opportunities. This scholarship is to be awarded to any regularly enrolled sophomore, junior or senior who is successfully pursuing an academic curriculum designed to prepare him/her for a career in the journalism and mass communications profession, especially in the area of government. This scholarship is renewable subject to satisfactory academic performance and to availability of funds.
Ernest R. Woodward Memorial Journalism Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1981 to perpetuate the memory of Woodward, a long-time distinguished Kansas newspaper
publisher and state leader.
David W. Wright Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship was established in 1982 by family and friends of the late David Wright as a tribute to honor his memory and to provide financial assistance and tuition to journalism and mass commmunications majors. This scholarship is awarded to any junior or senior with a demonstrated financial need.
Fred Wrightman Award for Excellence in Photojournalism
This award was established in 1980 by friends of the late Fred Wrightman, who was the chief photographer at the Manhattan Mercury before his death in 1979, to perpetuate his memory and to recognize the journalism and mass communications student who has contributed the most to excellence in photojournalism. This scholarship is available to be awarded to any journalism and mass communications student.
