Attention: Scholarship Committee

Materials to include:

Section 1: Application letter
This should express your professional interests and why you are attending the Miller School. Give us some sense of what you hope to accomplish in your professional career and how that is exemplified in your scholarship and extracurricular activities. Give us a short description of who you are, what major, what year, and why you deserve a scholarship. Also, include a synopsis of your more challenging courses and what you did to succeed in those courses. Remember spelling and grammar count! This should not exceed one page. Include your Wildcat ID number.

Incoming/transfer students should also include a letter from a journalism adviser or teacher who is familiar with their work.

Section 2: All University Application (SFA)
A copy of this completed form must be included with this application. When you submit your K-State SFA online, be sure to print a copy and include it with your JMC scholarship packet.

Section 3: Examples of Student Work
In this section, include three (3) examples. Choose your best work (can include classroom examples) and please do not include anything that has red marks (grading) on it. All your work can be in one area or can include several areas. Include only three total. Please explain, in one or two paragraphs, what your role was in producing the work. If this was a group project, please give specific information on your part in producing the item.

  • Writing: Examples can include high school/college newspaper stories, press releases, advertisements, English compositions, Web sites*, etc.
  • Visual: Examples can include posters, fliers, advertisements, PSAs, newspapers, Web sites*, photographs, drawings, etc.
  • Audio: Examples can include newscasts, radio shows, voice work for commercials, original audio for Web sites*, etc.
  • Multimedia: Examples can include standard-format DVDs, CD-ROMs, VHS tapes, or Web sites*, that include more than one kind of media content. Be sure to make it clear which elements of the example are your work, and make it easy for the committee to locate these elements.
  • *Web sites must include the complete URL of the area to be evaluated. It must be clear to the evaluator exactly what pages are to be examined. (Including print outs of these pages is recommended.)

Section 4: Media/Practical Experience
Please include what work you have done for media, a corporation, an organization, and/or a non-profit group. Please give us a paragraph on each activity. If you have held executive positions in this work, please indicate the position and the nature of the work involved. This can also include journalism and mass communications internships.

Section 5: Extracurricular Activities
This could include jobs, clubs, volunteer work, sports, honor societies, etc. Please write a brief paragraph on each activity and tell whether you had supervisory, management or leadership positions.

Section 6: Transcripts
Freshman and transfer students must submit their official transcripts. Returning students should submit copies of their most recent K-State transcripts.

General Policies

  • Applications lacking any of the materials cited above will not receive full consideration.
  • A minimum 2.5 GPA is required unless the donor of a specific scholarship has designated otherwise.
  • Scholarships are awarded for two semesters of full-time work. The student can expect to receive half of each scholarship at the beginning of each semester. No students will receive full scholarships for half-year enrollment. In addition, if you fail to enroll for at least 12 hours (or 9 hours for graduate students) and complete at least 9 hours of credit in the fall semester, your scholarship for the subsequent spring semester will be cancelled.
  • You are not eligible for a scholarship if you have more than 89 hours by the end of the fall semester of the preceding academic year unless special circumstances warrant further consideration. If you have more than 89 hours by the end of the fall semester, but plan to return the next fall, please explain why the Scholarship Committee should consider your application for a scholarship.

If you have questions, please contact Scholarship Chair, Joye Gordon or Brittany Borger.
